Benefits of rosemary

Rosemary is native to the Mediterranean. Rosemary takes its name from the Latin words “ros maris” meaning ‘dew of the sea’. In Ancient Greece, scholars wore wreaths of rosemary around their foreheads, as it was believed to help with memory. In Ancient Egypt, rosemary was laid on the top of sarcophagi. During the Middle Ages it was believed that rosemary helped ward off negativity and evil. Thus sprigs were tucked away under pillows and under beds to ward off nightmares and visits from evil spirits. Perhaps this is why rosemary is still used to this day in religious ceremonies as incense and burned to cleanse sacred spaces.

In ancient times and still to this day the benefits of rosemary are well known. Rosemary is used as a cure for all sorts of ailments. Rosemary contains salicylic acid, a precursor of aspirin. This phenomenon might explain why rubbing rosemary oil into joints effectively eases arthritis and other rheumatic joint pains. The plant also contains antibacterial and antimicrobial elements and is used by modern day doctors to treat skin disorders like dandruff or irritation. It also helps with poor circulation and treats symptoms of exhaustion. In exciting news, researchers have found that rosemary, containing important phytochemicals, helps prevent the depletion of acetylcholine (a very important brain chemical needed for normal neurotransmission). This research could potentially lead to the discovery of cures for Alzheimer’s disease in the years to come.

The benefits of rosemary in aromatherapy are numerous. Rosemary aroma can help promote a strong memory, increase attention spans, remain focused, and alertness. At Nature Creation, we use rosemary in our unique herbal blend because we particularly like its soothing scent, its ability to help clear your head and retain the positive elements you experienced throughout the day. We must say, its beautiful purple flowers are a joy to have in any house, and just the aroma from the plant is enough to get your day started on the right foot!
